Iris from cuttings??

I was driving by a local nursery when some magnificent TB Iris caught my eye. I pulled over to take pictures (yes I'm dedicated) and as I was taking pictures of these lovely dark, inky blue TB iris and crimson, rusty TB's ... a worker came over and we chatted for a bit. He cut off some stalk and told me I could start my own from cuttings. Just to use some dry powder root stimulator and plant it is moist, light soil.

I've never heard this... has anyone had any luck with this? The stalk hr cut from was very healthy and still flowering. He gave me the flower stalk and I have it in water blooming.. (so beautiful and fragrant!!) and I have a healthy 8 in stalk wrapped in a moist paper towel waiting (overnight), so I can try the root stimulator, but I didn't want to try it until I knew it was worth a shot.

I can't find anything on the web about starting TB's from cuttings, so I came here. Any advice is welcomed! Worst case scenario I can just go back and pay for some rhizomes, but I do love the challenge of trying something new!! :)

faryad_love2002, no, not iris. That is a snapdragon, Antirrhinum.

No, I don't think you can root cut flower stems of tall beardeds. Get a division of rhizome and you will have much better luck.

Maybe he cut off part of the rhizome?

I did get a fan that had been snapped off right where it joins the rhizome to root one time. I'd written the name on the fan and was potting it up when I snapped off the fan by accident, so I stuck the fan in the soil to mark the rhizome until I got a label, and then never removed the fan, and the thing rooted! Rhizome rotted, incidentally. Bizarre...

But rooting a cut bloomstalk? Unless there was some rhizome with it, I've never heard of such a thing, and can't imagine it would work, unfortunately.

Thanks for the input all.
It was a bloom stalk that he cut for me, as I said in the first post. I had never heard of Iris from cuttings, so I wanted to be sure I wasn't crazy, and the man just didn't know what he was talking about! I went back and begged them to let me dig up a few, and they did, and I paid for them, Which I was happy to do! :)

I'll be looking for ID's on a new thread shortly!
