'sunken' stalks

I'm starting a new thread on this because I'm not sure it is the same problem that Mike had, although it could be the same cause. [Mike and others described unusually short stalks cause by rapid temperature changes.]

I have several plants this year that have grown to normal height, but the stalk is collapsed or sunken so that a cross section would look more like an I-beam than a tube. Most of the flowers have flopped over once the buds got too heavy, but a couple have made it to bloom. I've never seen this before.

Is this a temperature thing too? Or could it be from too little water? I don't think we have had rain since early March. Even in our zone we usually have decent rain in the spring. I actually broke down and watered last night.
