Does anybody know if there is an Iris database that I can go to to find Iris names and hybridizer? Does the Iris Society have one?

Thanks in advance

    Greetings,

Yes, there is a database for the American Iris Society. You can find it at http://www.irisregister.com

You must pay if you wish to do searches or to locate anything introduced 1990 or later. They have free checklists for 1969, 1979 and 1989 lists.

    Sincerely,
    Carlos

The AIS does have one at: http://irisregister.com/

Unfortunately there is a fee in order to access that database.

Many, many gardeners have been combining their efforts to build the plantfiles database on davesgarden.com and there were 17,613 iris entries at the time of typing this. I've almost finished double checking all of the A's from the 90's checklist (a printed listing of all iris registered and introduced within the 90's). If I ever see the complete upload of the 90's checklist, it will probably be just in time for the 2000 checklist's release.

There is much more work to put into it, but this is a database I can access without cost and I've come to rely upon it heavily while adding just under 300 plants and nearly 900 photos.

I fully support the American Iris Society and I wish that everyone could afford to access their database, but I can't justify the cost within my own budget. Either source will prove to be very useful.

Well I would rather pay the $10.00 a year for AIS one than use the one on Daves Garden. I don't like the mis-information they have. The year of introduction is wrong on many that were registered any year before the year it was introduced. And they refuse to change it.

My Glory of Dawn was registered in 2005 and introduced in 2007.
To me false information is worse than no information.

I agree. I don't like the choice to use the year of registration over the year of introduction. However, if the daylily people can make their database, not only, available to members, but the to the public as well (at no cost), I wonder why it's so difficult for the AIS (especially without photos).

Another frustration with Daves Garden is the mis-spelling by photo submitters. No checking is done.

And I'm guilty of submitting one that was misnamed when I purchased it. Tried to remove it and was unable to! Maybe this has been changed?

As with any National Plant Society, it takes people with time to do these jobs. When I was a member of AIS, these jobs were all gratis. To my knowledge no one was paid. Dues were collected to pay for the Bulletin, and printing. There comes a time when money does rear it's ugly head.

I was only hoping to offer sources and options and had no intentions of pushing my opinions when I responded, so I'm going to withdraw from this discussion after this message.

However, I want to point out that there are people double checking the PF and if you ever find a mistake (or make one) you can notify them by clicking the "report an error" button. Also, if you added the plant yourself you can click the "edit this entry" link and retype anything.

As I stated before, I fully support the AIS. I'm a very proud supporting, contributing, recruiting, and active member and I wish only to see it thrive. I've spent many hours happily offering the services I might have (locally, regionally, and nationally) and will joyfully continue to do so indefinitely.

http://www.irisregister.com/ is a wonderful, convenient, and helpful resource that will prove to be worthwhile to any iris enthusiast and I never intended to imply anything less.
