Bone Meal Substitute?

Hi all,

I live in a rutal area that's full of wildlife -- coyotes, raccons, bunnies, etc. Although I know it's early (or late depending on your point of view) in the season for planting irises. But that's OK, I've done this before so I'll be fine. My question is, I can't use bone meal in my garden (the smell causes animals to dig in the soil). Is there another soil amendment that I can use that will get my irises off to a good start?

Thanx,
