ID4 if possible

I found a tag that indicated this could be "Prissy Miss"??

The tangerine beards are correct. My 'Prissy Miss' is blooming right now and here's a photo I took of it a few days ago. The blooms do open more fully and have the shape of the ones in your photo.

Here is a link that might be useful: photo of 'Prissy Miss'

I don't think it looks like PRISSY MISS, which has shorter falls, rosier color, and some nice venation at the haft.

It looks like the picture that "mountaineer" posted on your link, but it doesn't look much like the other ones to me. Knowing that it probably came from a box store, that's what's planted in that bed, mostly, it could be anything but who knows?

Njiris, do you have a picture of your "Prissy Miss"?

    Thanks you both, MOna

I can give you two stong possibities. Vanity(Hager 1974) Dykes 1982. Pink Taffeta(Rudolph 1965) Dykes 1975. I have both. Both bloomed this year almost at the same time. Vanity is still in bloom but is not as sharpe as when it first opened. PT was cut by my wife and carried to the nursing home so I can't see it. These are very much alike in my Dykes bed. If my memory is correct PT may have more ruffle than Vanity. You may have Vanity. If you want positive ID send me a rhizome and I will grow it between the two. It might turn out to be neither, but then you would have two that you know it is not. I got both of mine from Blue J.

    Hello Rebel144,

I looked at pictures of your two and according to the pics I saw, I don't believe it's either. Vanity rang bells in my head, one like I might have bought a Vanity sometime. When I looked at it's pictures, it's just not the same. I'll tell you whats different. It's the shape of the falls. My falls hang down more. Yours seem to stand out from the base of the standards and then fall down. Mine just fall down. Also, the description on Vanity said lt coral beards and my beards are really a deep bright orange. I checked out PT and its' beards are not the same and the shape of the falls is different also.

I'd love to send you one of mine. Would you like to work up a trade? Please check out my others listed on my page plus I will send you an invite to check out my phots.

    Thanks again, Mona

I was just comparing your photo to what I have in bloon right now. If the colors in the photo are true then the beards are exactally the same color as what I call vanity. Actually I have it from two sources but I only mentioned the commericial grower. But then again what I have could be wrong from both sources. It is hard to tell from a photo the only way to be fairly sure is to grow them side by side and even then we may never know because it is only as good as what the supplier told you it was. My first rule of thumb when trying to decide if an iris is correctly named is to read the description in the iris check list. I try to see if I can in any way make what I have fit that description. There again color and even form is in the eye of the beholder. What is a deep or bright orange to some may be tangerine to others.

I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to sound critical, no way. Please don't think I did. Man, the written word sure does look harsh even when it's supposed to be meek.

I sure did have "VAnity" in my memory and that may be what it is. It's just so hard to tell, just as you said. I reallly do thank you for all your help. I don't know what I was thinking about the bright orange and tangerine, jee weez, they look the same even on fruit! Just chalk it up to a really bad senior moment, just shy of my absent minded self.

    Thank you again, Mona

Here is my PRISSY MISS...however, I doubt it is true because it is a Mart PM! I personally think it very attractive, especially the subtle lime stripe down the center which I think is quite unique.
Let me see what else I can dig up along the lines of a creamy pink.

Here is PINK TAFFETA(top), and VANITY (below it)and yours is definitely neither. The shape and color are all wrong. Your iris is older than both.

Not that this helps you any but here is a picture of a similar one that I grow: acquired as a trade years ago and simply known as grandma's peach.
I suspect your iris is a 50's vintage...too pink for the 40's, just right for the late 50's .

njiris, That sure looks a lot like the Vanity that Blue J sold me. I have the same iris from another source. I am beginning to think that it may be impossible to 100% ID any iris after it has been introduced for a while unless it is really different. My so called Vanity and Pink Taffeta both have a beard that looks the same as your photo. I have two from different sources that are supposed to be Vanity(these match growing side by side) and althought similiar they are a different iris from the one that is supposed to be PT. My wife cut PT so I have to go from memory but it did have more ruffle on the falls than Vanity. Actually your photos seem to match my Vanity and PT except the beards don't really show that well in the photos. The beards on my PT and Vanity are like the beards on your unknown and like the beards of the unknown that started this thread. One of my iris projects is to have an area of all the Dykes metal winners. I will have them all from commercial growers when I get my orders late summer and fall. I have 50 growing now and all have bloomed or have buds except for Song of Norway. I never take any offence at any thing. We all have our opinions and there is nobody any more open to gaining any knowledge than I am. I don't think any commercial grower and very few people on ebay sell a bad ID on purpose. I know for a fact that both do however because I have some from both sources that in no way could be the iris described in the check list. As far as my Dykes I plan to continue to get them from different sources and compare them until I am convinced that I have them as accurate as possible. Another goal is to have them all bloom in the same year. I have read that is extremely hard to do because with that many all are not equally hardy in a given location. Happy gardening to all, Lee Mincy

I did a "Google" search of Prissy Miss and there's probably 50 different ones that comes up!Ok, I've got a pretty pink unnamed, cause I just love the older style Iris.

NJiris, I love the one in your first picture it goes on my want list, it's a beauty. I will be trying to find the next two to add to my want list, too. The one marked as 3, really looks like what I have, a bunch.

Lee, I'm so proud that you didn't take offense. I'd love to see pictures next year of your garden with all the Dykes in bloom. I can not imagine a more beautiful site. Do you have any pictures of this year?

Last year my favorites were white. I grew to love the Historics last year and that love is even stronger this year. I'm in love with pinks. Now of course, all the great purples and blues are right close and not to mention the yellows. OHHH, did I forget Orange and red!Ok, I love them all! I've never seen an ugly Iris!

Looks like rain today for us in NE MS, we need it. Blessing to all, Mona

mlwgardener, I did not get any of the dykes bed. My wife was cutting them and taking them to the nursing home almost as fast as they bloomed. Nothing gives my wife more pleasure than to see the eyes light up on the older people when she takes them a bloom. This is not just iris, I try to keep her in flowers from frost until frost and I am pretty much successful. Most of my dykes just had one bloom stalk since a lot of these were first year plants from last year. I did cruise all my iris every morning before she got to them so I got to see them and record my data as far as bloom date, height and my impressions. Some I have had for three years and these put on a show but she got most of those also. These older people are always telling her I sure know how to grow flowers(I got the love from my Father's Mother) but she tells them I just stick them in the ground, God grows them. If I have a few more years I have all kind of plans for different iris gardens. Mostly right now I am just gathering material. I am very serious about trying to be as sure as possible about having all the dykes winners. Of the 40+ that I have had to bloom I think most maybe right but I am still planning on getting all from as many sources as possible and growing them side by side. I am retired and have almost unlimited space(as least as much as I will need) so I plan on growing a lot of plants. This is way more than anyone wants to know but I tend to ramble on about things I am passionate about. Lee Mincy

Here's another candidate -- Pink Horizons (Schreiner, 1968). I just bought it in bloom from a local general nursery because I like the older look of the longer falls.

I had no idea there were so many pink iris with tangerine beards. It may take a while before I am pretty sure I have the right Vanity and Pink Taffeta.

I can think of nothing any better than taking the Iris blooms to the nursing home. My sister-n-l and her daughter both are nurses at a local home. She is always talking about things that cause her "Elders" to be happy and fresh cut flowers tops the list right after visits from family. You and your wife are special to do this service.

I sure have enjoyed the lessons on Iris in the threads that I posted. Kinda makes me want to loose some more tags! Thanks agian to all, Mona

Mona, My wife is the special one. I just grow things. I would still grow things and be just as passionate about them even if I were the only one to ever see them. My wife tells me that there are people out there who eventally never see anybody except the staff. She says that each one of them had a life, they had their successes and failures. Now a lot of them are just in a place where they are well cared for but had much rather be back in the world they came from. Some really just don't have anybody left. Some are so old that they have out lived everyone they ever knew. If a vase of iris or glads or buttercups or whatever is in bloom helps them get through their day in any way then it gives me great pleasure to know that but there is nothing special about what I am doing. I just love to grow things and share them with other people if they like but that is not my motivation. Happy gardening, Lee Mincy

Rebel44- Not only are there dozens and dozens of registered pinks with tangerine beards from the 50s and 60s, but Cooley's sold collections of 'Hall's pinks' as well. these were unregistered seedlings from Dave Halls gardens that were too nice to toss, but not so great as to deserve a name and introduction, so there are probably hundreds and hundreds of them still tucked away in various gardens all over the US. Tangerine bearded pinks from that era have to be as numerous and difficult to ID as purples from the 20s-40s or pre-1900 diploids are. Vanity however should not be difficult to ID as there are certainly correctly names rhizomes of it in commerce. It is relatively recent by comparison.

Mike, I am getting my Dykes all from commercial growers. I am also matching these with others I run across from other sources. This thread has convinced me that probably Vanity and Pink Taffeta will be the most difficult to be sure of. Of the 40+ Dykes I had to bloom this year San Francisco(Mohr 1927) was by far the least impressive. When you have older iris growing next to these beautiful modern iris they seem to pale in comparison. That does not however dull my enthusiam for the historics. Lee Mincy

    Lee:
I don't grow either VANITY or PINK TAFFETA, but I did post the pictures (from Presby). They do look alot alike from those photos! But I recall that there were some subtle but noticeable differences in person. This year I will try to take special note of the differences and try to get some better shots for you.

njiris, I grow both within 2 feet of each other(at least what I think is V and PT). You are right when looked at side by side it is easy to tell the difference in what I have. From 30 feet away they look the same. What got me to thinking was that Vanity looks just like the NOID that started this thread and since there are so many pink iris with tangerine beards who knows. Both Vanity and PT came from a commercial grower that so far I have not had a missed ID as far as I know. If an iris matches the checklist description and comes from a commercial grower I usually think I have the right one. I have several times received iris from commercial growers that were just flat wrong. They were not even close to the checklist. I will look forward to you posting your photos to see if I can make myself believe I have the right two. I will also get them from amother grower and compare. Almost all growers carry a lot of the dykes and at least one carries them all. Both V and PT are beautiful iris so I am sure they are available from many growers. Right now I have ideas for at least 6 different iris gardens. My dykes collection will be complete when I get my orders this year but I will continue to cross check until I am satisfied. Lee Mincy
