'June' is the Hosta chameleon, it's looks depend on the amount of direct light. The picture below shows my main 'June', which is partially in direct sun and partially open shade, and a potted immature one that typically is in almost full sun. Look at the difference in leaf colour between the far left - shade- and far right -narrower leaf edge, in the sun-.

This is a really interesting thread and probably the best argument I've seen for getting more than one specimen of (certain) hosta. June is gorgeous either way, but the north side one is especially stunning.

There is another variable with the two hosta on the south end of your bed. They have another side of their bed enclosed by the cement walkway, and not as much free space for them. I wonder if you might give them an extra dose of fertilizer and more water?

In my garden, the house is not sitting true north/south/east/west, so one portion of my planting beds wind up with having more or less sun than the rest. Or, some have morning, some have afternoon. It is hard to control the total exposure to the sun properly, since an hour of early afternoon sun is much hotter than late afternoon sun.

I formed the habit years ago of taking pictures of the shade patterns around my house at different times of the year. It can guide you with which plants need the most water too.
