In my experience, irises can be stored out of the soil for a good length of time - maybe a few months! I recently received some rhizomes from Europe - no telling how long they had been out of the soil. They looked pretty decrepit - yet when I planted them they quickly grew a very good set of leaves. Probably will need a year or more to adjust but I know that they will bloom someday.
