I was in walmart in other county& they have 3 gallon pots of huge variegated hydrangea.all it says is pee gee.the flowers are a light liliac color real pretty.nice plant for $17.96.Does anyone have pics of their variegated hydrangeas? and possibly a picture of "mariessi"?and a possible growth hight of what those plants grow up to?We have mild winters here in south TX.

My birthdays the 23rd and my SIL is makeing sure he sees these and that I want them& I'm even pressing for a pair.

Its one of those you see it ....your heart falls ....and you are glad you left check book at home....cause you would have bought it even though would have been short and would have thought was worth a $30 check fee....

I think perhaps the plant was mislabeled. Hydrangea macrophylla mariesii variegata is not a peegee. It is however, a very nice plant that will mature at about 6ft but generally you see it at about 4 x 4. It likes a good deal of (at least afternoon) shade in the south and should be purchased for the foliage as the blooms are just a bonus. At $17.96 they are well worth the money. I really like mine a lot more than I originally thought I would and I paid more for smaller plants but they have grown quickly....Snatch them up!!!.....yg

Here in zone 7a I rarely get blossoms and when I do they are an unremarkable medium blue. The folliage is a grey/green and white that make it a valuable shrub to lighten up a dark corner. I have some under planted with Japanese painted fern and begonia's. Hope you enjoy

The one I seen had more white on the leaves& the flowers are a lil different.Though they were 3 gallon containers, they were FULL containers they were probably only at about almost 2 ft wide and was roughly 30 inches tall.I only set one out in ailse to get a better look at plant& when set against dark green leafy plant looked great. It really jumped out.

The best photo that looked close to it was on Blueperrienals web site, but was a small picture.Thats why asked about THAT plant asked about the mariessi. My SL garden book mentions that the mariessi V. is rooted from a sport off the older form Mariessi & to remove any green limbs so the plant don't revertback to green from

If I don't buy the plant soon.At least the next time I'm there I'll take a picture.

Oh, thanks for publishing the picture of the Variegated Hydrangea. Early this summer, The catalog that was supposed to send me something different... was very apologetic ad sent me 6 of these variegated hydrangeas. The are 6-7 inches tall and I am looking forward to them even looking remotely like this.. I thought they were junk at first. But.. after doing some research.. I think I'm going to love this shrub. Thank You!!!

I purchased two "Limelight Hydrangea" shrubs this summer. So far, so good. Do I need to prune them this fall? I normally winter over my daylilies with mulch and pine needles, can I do the same for the Limelights? Will the variegated hydrangea make it through a cold Maine winter?
Thanks for any help, just starting out.

    Daylilylady,

The Limelight (a Paniculata) blooms on new wood and is hardy in your zone so it needs no winter protection but the Variegata (a Macrophylla) is not hardy in zone 5 and so it will need plenty of protection. Do a search on this forum for "overwintering hydrangeas" and you will find plenty of useful info.....yg
