Which way should the fan be facing?

So I planted a Bearded Iris for the first time recently, and I was confused because I wasn't sure if the fan needed to be facing outward or the rhizome. It's near a fence so unless I make it sideways, either the fan or the rhizome will be facing outward towards anyone looking at it.

Should it be the fan facing out?

I'd vote for the rhizome to be facing outward(away from fence), toward the viewer. Seems more attractive to me.

Which way makes the flower more visible? Or does it not matter?

What John said. The iris will grow that direction, and sideways. Otherwise it will try it to grow under the fence.

The flower stalk is above the foliage for viewing either way.

When planting iris in extremely hot weather, it's good to face the broad side of the fan north and south. Makes for less heat to hit the fan. I know it's not hot yet, this is for later.
