I keep on hand a big supply of those wire stakes with an open loop at the top and pop them on when a stalk gets ready to bloom. Enough rain and wind can knock over even a sturdy variety --and you never know when the weather will sneak up on you.

That's why I have converted so much of my iris beds to the medians instead of the talls. I am sick to death of having to stake TBs to keep their flowers out of the dirt.

I also lift the fallen with the same stakes terry mentioned....... but I also use that as a good excuse to cut those fallen for a wonderful indoor bouquet. :^)

Good idea. But it's true: it's so hard to cut iris while there are still buds unfurled. I sometimes cut the last bloom on a stalk to take to work with me...

What a relief. I thought I was doing something wrong when many of my big irises toppled over last year. I was about to post to ask for a remedy. Now I just feel like I'm in good company. I'll get the stakes ready.

I've only been really growing iris for the last 7 years and generally they only seem to fall over from the heavy rains..I just tie them up and that's it. Not all of them fall. Its just part of the whole garden thing..

The historics have smaller blooms but are less likly to fall. That said, they still do as was the case with my very first this year. Its in my window.

I stake most of my iris. I know that's not what you want to hear.
