In my last rental I was unable to plant in the ground. Instead I bought a dozen 40lb bags of topsoil (the cheap stuff) and planted tomatoes straight in the bags. All I did was shape the bag a little, poke a few holes in the bottom and rolled the top down. I was a little afraid of them toppling over so I tied the stakes together in a grid of sorts. I planted cherry tomatoes and early girls and had a ton of success. The second year I reused the bags after adding a little compost.

Sounds like your bags will hold up well. If you are buying the soil you can save yourself the trouble of transferring it and just plant straight in the bag.
