My advice is to do both seed and clones, and use rockwool cubes. I think rockwool is a great help, as it keeps the roots ideally moist for a long time.
You can start with seed in a rockwool cube in the early spring , then transplant them outside.
To make clones, you'll need a "mother plant", early spring.

I think on the contrary that you'll have a lot of succes on the farmer's market by offering hydro-tomatoes.
Let the customer decide wheter to go on with hydro, or to transplant in soil. You might even give a folder about hydroponics with every plant you sell.

your plants wont like going from hydro to soil but youll find that out when you get there. (wrong kind of roots)

most people propogate tmaters from seed because cloning takes time and tmater seeds are cheap. a plant from seed will always be more vigorous than one from a cutting, too.

Shelbyguy has a point, but if you have a problem with transplantation into soil, try & give your plants more moisture until they take. I have taken a 6Â tomatoe out of hydro and planted it in soil & it fruited well. ItÂs not something I would suggest, but it was something I had to do at the time out of necessity.

Hello, I tried starting a potato from a peeling with an eye on it. I used acrillite, a baked clay aggragate as the medium in a 32 ounce cup. the peeling was about 1/2 inch in depth. I kept the medium moist, and after around 10 days, a green shoot came up. Next, I removed the sprouting peel from the acrillite. Roots do not stick to this baked clay product. I replanted the peeling with sprout about 3/4 inch deep in a drip feed hydro trough using a 50/50 mix of vermiculite and perlite. The sprout came up in a few days, and now, the plant is about 6 to 10 inches tall. I have a picture of the plant available for viewing via the link below. chuck
