Flowering question - hardiness

Hi,

I've not posted on this particular forum before, normally I lurk on Cottage Gardens, but this question in particular is hydrangea focused. I'm hoping you can help.

Three years ago in early Spring after my precious doxie died and I buried him in my backyard, I went to the greenhouse nursery just to plant something pretty in bloom at the time on his grave. It was a small hydrangea with pretty blooms. I've since heard the nursery say that variety is not hardy in Michigan.

I've never dug the plant up, but each year it grows to be about 3x3, very green and lush but never has had a single bloom. I've no idea what the variety was, but if was not hardy, I expected the entire plant to die, which it has not, it just never blooms. My question is, is it not blooming due to the cold winters but still it grows leaves each spring when the weather warms?

If it is never going to bloom, I'd prefer to replace it with a plant that will....or if the plant does resprout each year, do I anticipate it may bloom? It was in dappled shade until last year when the city had to remove some trees. Now it gets more sun.

Sorry I don't have more specific information on what I planted. If you have any suggestions, great!

Thank you....Mindy
