Do dark brown Irises exist?

Do iris come in dark brown, you know like leather brown boots? I think that would be an unusual item to add to my collection.

I have looked and looked but all mention of "brown" are always in fact shades of orange and yellow.

I want dark, plain solid true brown.

But do they exist? If they don't, than I think its a waste of time looking.....

I love brown irises. But I've never seen a 'brown' iris that I would say was darker than a medium tone. Very dark brown would be an excellent goal for a hybridizer to reach for, as I think it would be really unique and a wonderful color break. Seems to me that most browns are really more of a rusty orange, a golden beige-brown, or an oxblood red. A deep walnut brown iris would be wonderful - but I've never seen anything close.

You could probably achieve a dark brown effect in the garden with something like Marauder, or Court Martial. Some of the deeper reds will appear that colour in the right situation. I am thinking particularly of the dark brown colour of the falls on Supremem Sultan, which probably appear more brown because of the deep yellow in the standards.

Walter, Do all or most of those go back to Tobacco Road or was a completely different line developed later on? Lee Mincy

I would say the fals on "Death by Chocolate" are brown. Huckleberry Fudge appears brown to me also. When I get home on my own computer I will post a couple of pics of them.

I don't know, but they grow well. It is my understanding Tobacco Road was a slow grower in most of the country as were its children. It and the progeny seemed rot-prone, too.

Huckleberry Fudge and Sterling Prince are both brown plicatas. HF is about as brown as they come, but it has a big white circle in the middle of the falls, so is not a brown self. Hot Fudge is an IB plic.

Tobacco Land was a good brown with limited distribution. I doubt that you could find it.

You may read the term 'greyed orange.' That is what the old AIS Color Chart called brown. It also called brown 'dark orange,' and pink was 'light red.' This chart was used into the early seventies, when it was finally abandoned. Thank goodness!

Has anyone got a picture of LADY FIRE and PARQUET?

LF is described as brick red - but its about as brown as I ever saw.... PARQUET blooms a sandlewood brown - or a rosy
    brown.

Here's a lovely iris of Walter Moores-- not all brown, but certainly with rich deep brown falls! It's new for me this year:
