pH testing

I really don't know where to post this question!! I've heard of making pH testers using plants, but don't know how to go about it or what plants to use. I have heard of red cabbage being used (don't know how), but there must be others as well. Can anyone help?

There is some flowers that are bluish at one pH and whitish at another. It's been too long. I don't remember the name. Perhaps someone on the forum will provide the name. I have this hazy notion that the name is "H........".

Albert, you're thinking of hydrangea. In acid soil the flowers are blue while neutral to alkaline conditions will turn the flowers pink.
