Dormant in summer?

I have two irises that were pulled out of the ground after sprouting and replanted in ice cream buckets. I followed the instructions y'all gave me at http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/iris/msg0501431519869.html?13 as best I could.

The leaves are brown, in spite of watering every few days, and it doesn't look like these will be doing much. I'd like to try again next year if possible. Should I cut them off at the dirt level? I could really use the ice cream buckets for other plants, so would it matter if I put the rhizomes and dirt in smaller pots, if they're not growing anyway? Are they dormant? Should I keep watering? Thanks.
