Dry beans are not a good crop for the southeast in general. But the Black Turtle seems to be more successful than most. Here is what the U. of Florida has on the subject. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/mv018 In any event, I would suugest trying one that is not readily available from field plantings. Mass production makes dry beans very cheap. Another option is cowpeas, which do well in most of the southeast.

Down in Homestead, FL(Pole Bean Capitol of the World, lol, that's what the sign says when you get there,) they grow cranberry/borlotti/Roman(whatever name you like) beans very successfully. We buy them fresh when we are in Key Largo in late Feb./early March. I'm of course not sure which varieties they are growing, but at least you know they can be grown there.

Lived in Homestead some years ago, they did have such busy vegetable packing houses & I remember as a little kid, my grandfather bringing in huge bushels of pole beans, we'd sit & snap them on the porch. That was years ago.......goodness, I am getting old! LOL! Thanks for the info & names/suggestions, the cranberry & the black bean sound cool & we are trying some cowpeas too!
