Potting is great if you can accomodate that. Water only when the top few inches of soil is dry.

If you can't, dig, shake off soil, place in paper bags and replant as soon as possible at your new location. What month are you moving? The rule about replanting is 7 weeks before the first expected freeze (to get a root system going to avoid heaving). Oops, see you are going to apt./patio --- sun?

Many people report storing rhizomes in the cellar/garage all winter. This may work for older cultivars but possibly not with newer ones. They don't abuse as well.

I would not expect proper bloom the first year in their new location. And TB's do not do well in pots - for a year ok, maybe the 2nd, but by the 3rd year poor. Unless you have large half barrels. These guys like to "travel", use those nutrients and travel some more.

Potting the iris will work fine. I have a friend who has wintered several pots here in KY. They even bloom in her pots.
