Okay to winterize before leaf drop

It was a very warm October here in Wisconsin, so my mophead hydrangea has not lost its leaves. It has been freezing every night this week, so I'd like to get it protected. Can I fence it and cover it with leaves before its leaves drop or will it cause moisture problems?

Some people up north wait until temps go down into the 20-25 range before applying winter protection techniques. I would wait for a hard freeze well under 32 since your plant is resisting dormancy at current levels.
