From what I have read, SCREAMING RED is a color iris breeders have been trying to breed for some time now. True BLUE is another. Good luck with that one.....:)

I find it really confusing in the plant world, where certain shades of purple or maroon become "red". If there were no true red in any plants, I could understand it. I know there is no true red iris, but I hate it when they call a purple iris that leans toward pink, red. Or the deep maroon ones, like Cannonball, they just are not red :)

And why do redbuds have purple spring blooms...just food for thought.

I don't know of any iris that are close to a true red...sorry.

There are no true red irises, just as there are no true blue roses. If you want true red, I recommend Showbiz or Lavaglut floribunda roses.

If you can live with dusky or rusty red, burgundy, or red-black, there are options. There are some nice red-violets too. Take a look at Rita's photos of Rio Rojo- a nice dark dusky burgundy.
