Moving Iris Help!

Hello all!

I am a big fan of irises and have many in my garden. We're moving at the end of this month and I plan to take my many varieties (as well as many of my other perennials) with me. However, I am seriously short on pots to transport them all in, so I was thinking of transporting the iris bare.

I know in the past, if I dig them up, shake the dirt from them, and store them in a cool dry place, they have kept for a while. But that has been later in the summer.

Does anyone have any experience doing this in Z5 or Z6 this time of year? If you've done it, have they all made it or did you lose some and if so, how many did you lose?

If it means I'm going to lose them, I'll just have to go out and buy pots, but from past experience, I'm guessing they'll be fine out of the dirt for a few weeks. I had planned to dig them in the next few days and replant the first week of July as soon as we are in the new house.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Tara
