Peas can take a LOT of cold.

Mine have been in for a month already. The Ag extension info for my part of NC is to plant them on New Year's Day. I didn't manage quite that early, but I planted them as soon as I had a place ready.

They haven't sprouted yet, but they're sitting there waiting for the right conditions -- which seem likely to occur this week.

I sowed 64 seeds today, but in a 128-cell tray. Yesterday, I transplanted 66 plants grown in a 200-cell tray, although in a GH. No one could tell (or did!) tell me the bottom temp peas can take and we had single digit thermometer reading a couple of days this week - I didn't want to take a chance.

Peas are fine down to about 10 degrees Fahrenheit. However, they don't germinate until soil temps are about 50. It only takes 3 warm days to trigger germination.

So then is the pre-sprouting some recommend an effective way of skipping the warm-temperature requirement for germination?

I'll try it both ways when my pea planting time comes around, but I am curious.
