Bad iris year!

Might be weather related? Out of 100 TB in the back only 11 bloomed, and 3 of those were deformed. Almost looks like Round Up damage, but I didn't use any. Out of 38 TB behind the house, 30 bloomed but 4 were deformed. None of my IB bloomed. We had several late freezes, then almost daily rain once they started blooming. Then I broke my right arm last Friday. They said a humeral head fracture. Right now I am typing with one finger. I can't work for at least 6 to 8 weeks. I have several iris orders coming that I will need to cancel, which makes things even worse (you all know how addicted I am). At least I have some pictures to post, although it sure is taking me longer to do it. Yes, it has been a bad iris year ;(

Oh isn't this sad? I have not a clue what caused this? You did use round up?
    Sorry about your arm too!
If I was closer to MI
    I would help you out!

That sounds like a nasty break on your arm. I hope that is a 1 in a hundred year disaster for your iris and that you don't have to see that again. Hope your shoulder break was work related too. That would be a long break without a check.

Looks like a combination of Roundup, hail, and cold weather.
Roundup can have a residual effect from late summer or fall to the next spring. I've seen it here. I never use Roundup in the spring.

    Get well soon!

I'm so sorry about your arm. I hope it heals promptly and properly for you.

We had so many late snowstorms and freezes here in the upper Midwest that I'm surprised to see anything blooming normally. I must say, though, that the majority of irises that are blooming for me this year have produced normal blooms. OTOH, a large number of irises have, and are continuing to, die back to the ground and refuse to put out new growth. It looks like scorch, but I believe it's just that all the late freezes were too much for some of these cultivars to handle. They can only take so much stress before they give up.

Be glad that yours are still alive and blooming. At least they're not dead!

Yikes! Shadow, that is a bad spring! Hope the summer brings you a speedy recovery. As for the irises, they just do what they do.

Oh no. Waht a bummer. My wishes for a healthy healing also.

We're in a record setting heatwave ~~ about 107 today and roses are crispy. The iris just look wilted. Better this than the deep freezes of the north.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes! I broke my arm at home when I was walking my 100-pound "puppy". We saw a deer, and she decided to chase it. Wet grass and tennis shoes don't mix. The ground won. Sure am glad I have about 5 weeks of sick and vacation time left at work. About my poor irises, I have never used Round Up, so it must have been the weather. I still have some pictures to post, and I will always enjoy looking at everyone else's pictures!

I know what you mean, my bottom garden took a hit too, many didn't bloom the bloom that did happen only about 20-30% were normal the rest were deformed even some of the plant growth was abnormal. My top garden which has a 10 foot difference was fine. Its the late frost-freezes we had and we had many bad ones this year. Very disappointing after waiting all winter, hopefully next year will be better. Where are you at E-mail me.

Hi Daloverat. Yes, iris people are a patient bunch for sure! I live in Roscommon County. I will not be dividing or trading this year. Sorry, but I do not give out my email address anymore.

I hope you heal quickly. :o)
I'm sorry about your iris too... If it would make you feel any better, the ones that you gave me are doing AMAZING this year, dispite the late frosts. I'll post pictures soon. And everytime I look at them, I think of you and send a THANKS! :o)

It's so odd that I ran across this post. I never come to the iris forum because I had spine surgery a couple of years ago and just quit gardening until recently. I have always had tons of iris and look forward to them blooming each year. Well I noticed that I didn't have a good bloom from them this year and decided that it had been forever since I divided them and started doing that today. I noticed that the majority never bloomed at all and that the rhizomes were overcrowded and some were so wet that they had started to rot. Good thing I decided to divide huh! So I guess it isn't just here in Indiana and while I hate to hear it, I must say I do feel better knowing it wasn't just me neglecting them that did it. Hope next year is better for you all and God bless! Sorry to hear about the arm too and I hope you heal quickly!
