Who comes up with these names? Do you HAVE to use one of them? What if I like names such as:

    "Chocolate Squirrel"
    "Mambo Explosion"
    "Nuclear Canteloupe"
    "Jailhouse Love"
    "Spectacled Possum"
    or
    "Wack-o President"?

Could I give my hostas those names? Of course someone might think they were named by Tony Avent, but what the heck!

    Lainey

Of course yu can use any name you want! I think Don just posted them as suggestions if someone has a seedling/sport they want to name and need inspiration. Sort of like those baby name lists that so many parents read when they are expecting - it is just a starting place.

Of, course, Alexa and Don. I must apologize. Upon re-reading my note I realize it sounded very snotty. It was a failed attempt to be funny. Don, or someone, has put together a nice list of classic names and probably took a while to do it too. It's a kind gesture and I apologize for being so flip about it.

I understand, Lainey! It is so hard to convey emotions on a post - sometimes I have posted somthing that is taken the wrong way and accidentally hurt someones feelings. I understand that there was no offense intended....

Have a great day and I think your name ideas are hilarious!

Do you sit around on rainy days and brainstorm names when it's impossible to garden or carry around a notebook or taperecorder and note the names as they come to you?! There's a lot to choose from and some of them are really great names.

I am not sure if it matters... just thought I would point out that "Lady in Red" is the name of a Hydrangea.

    Hello Don,

recently I purchased the following NR from Danny Van Eechaute:

    H. 'Lady in Red'
    H. 'Code Red'
    H. 'Simply Red'

I see the first one is in your list. To avoid double naming, it would be advisable not to use them any more for other plants.
Will be sending pictures to the Hosta Library shortly.

    Greetings from the Hosta Mill,

    Rob
