comet treatment

I read on some of the old postings about treating iris rot with comet. It said to take the rhizome and scrape off all the soft parts, then dust the entire rhizome with comet and let dry in sun. Also, to sprinkle comet on the dirt where the iris was growing. Is this correct? Do I rinse off the rhizome before replanting it, or just put it in the ground with the comet on? Wouldn't the comet sprinkled on the soil kill anything nearby? I am not sure if my irises have borers or rot, but 2 of them had very soft, mushy parts that smelled bad. I cut off all the mushy part, but I basically had to cut them in half. So, now there's a cut side exposed to whatever might get inside it. Also, the good halves have no leaves, but they do have small buds which I assume will be leaves. Is it worth trying this method and replanting them, or would it risk spreading the problem to my other iris?
