My one lilly

I have one lilly well....kinda...I did dig up a bunch on the side of the road and planted them next to my foundation. But in my real garden I have a single stargazer lilly. I have had it for 4 years. Last year a kid broke it and that was it. No lilly for the year. I really missed my lilly. She was the star of my garden. How can I get more without spending a fortune at the store? I am afraid to dig her up for fear of killing her. Can I start them from seed? HOW? Where do I get seeds? This year I will be putting up armor or just tomato cages so she can't get hurt again. I am brand new to lillies I hope I can acquire more for this summer.

It would take several years to get a blooming size plant. You may want to check out the North American Lily Society's website for info on seed starting. The price for Stargazer bulbs has come down significantly in the past years. They're pretty easy to find. Lot's of nurseries and big box stores will have them as will most mail order sources.
The ideal time for planting lily bulbs is in the fall, though they can also be planted in spring or as potted plants. You might want to check out B&D Lilies website or the websites of The Lily Garden or Buggycrazy. You'll find a huge variety of lilies that you'll never find in the box stores.

Thanks for the reply!!! I am itching for spring and some seed starting...I am glad you told me about the long wait time. I do kinda want results for my this year garden. Hopefully what Wally world has will do well...I can afford them and they are the only ones close to me. I will look into the sources you listed. Thank you so much. I think I'll need to get a book about lillies, so I can sit outside and dream!!!

I don't know what zone you're in, you might want to include that info in your posts. FYI Oriental Lilies of which Stargazer is one, tend to like slightly acidic soil. Asiatics are the easiest to grow and generally the fastest to multiply. Trumpets and OT's (Oriental - Trumpet cross) have the large flowers of an Oriental and generally have more vigor than Orientals. If you want a real stunner check out Black Beauty or Scheherazade. A single, mature stem will have 30 to 40 blooms. It will take 2 to 3 years to reach that size but will still make a nice show earlier. The colors are similar to that of Stargazer. Good luck and have fun with your lilies. When buying bulbs look for bulbs that are firm and plump, not shriveled or dried out. Remember that lily bulbs are never really dormant and should get into the ground as quickly as possible.
