southern butterbeans

Hello, I'm new to the forum. I've read several other posts about southern butterbeans, and I'd like to add my question to the mix. My grandmother (from MS) used to cook butterbeans and they were the greatest thing. I never saw them in their uncooked state, so I'm not sure what to look for in order to grow the same kind that she had. But, when they were cooked they were small (usually no bigger than the size of the tip of your pinky finger to the first joint in your pinky finger). They were gray when cooked (not white or brown)and they were very tender (probably due to the all-day cooking). Anyone know what type of butterbeans these might be? Thank you.

    lalusk, In the south, butterbean is used for all the small limas. Other areas, the large limas may be called butterbeans. The only "butterbean" that cooks grey as a fresh shellie is the colored butterbean Jackson's Wonder. As a fresh shellie, it appears white, but when cooked it is a slate grey. The dried form is reddish brown, more or less a solid color as opposed to the speckled butterbeans. Flavor is stronger than whites like Henderson's, but a good one in its own right. Probably the most vigorous and productive butterbean there is.
