Growing under Lights

onions under lights - what is happening?

I have a few 'windowboxes' of bunching onions growing about 4 1/2' below a 1000W metal hallide. The vegetative growth is becoming splotchy, and eventually turns papery and dies. The medium is around 50% compost to 50% coconut coir. DOes anyone know what is happening here?

JMO but I'd say you're smothering them with that media. Visit the "Container Gardening" forum for some better choices.
I use 50/50 peat/perlite for most plants but add a little vermiculite or sand depending on the plant and it's requirements.

The medium's fine . . onions love compost . . organic gardening requires compost . . I just discovered, however, that it is in fact the dreaded thrip. Removal advice? It's a pretty bad infestation.

Compost is not good in containers. But if you insist I'm not going to argue with you!
