Dig and divide your irises right now. The sooner you get them replanted, the more time they'll have to root in before winter. Cut their leaves back just enough so that they don't flop over when replanted. The more green leaf you can keep on them, the better the plants will be able to feed themselves.

would the same advice (to get replanted now) apply to my area? somewhere on here I had read to wait til it's cooler to plant my iris. I meanwhile stuck them into a few pots and followed that advice....we have a pretty hot and humid summer going here...and dont usually get any cold (serious cold that is) weather til Jan/Feb? and then we never get snow.

any thoughts?

rjinga, I would think that it would be better in your climate to wait until temps cool in the fall since you don't get cold weather until Jan. You just want to make sure your irises have 6-8 weeks to root in before your first frost.

Thanks for the advice above. I too need to divide and replant my iris - both purple and a lovely fragrant peach. I will do it tomorrow. I live in Maine and we have had a rather cooler than normal summer.
