What kind of beans do you have? What does the label say? Different kinds of bean have different growing habits. Some would work well in containers...others may need a trellis.

I've grown a few varieties of beans in containers, both bush beans and pole beans (which definitely need something tall to grow on). Some have grown very well and others not so well. I'd say don't give up on the idea if it doesn't work out the first time.

If you're not experienced with container gardens, you may want to check out the Container Gardening forum. There are some special challenges to growing in containers, especially watering issues. For future reference, I keep hearing that a pole bean called Rattlesnake produces better in hot, dry conditions than most other beans. I grew it in the ground last year, and it is quite tasty...and not super tall for a pole bean. It tastes good as a snap bean or dry bean.

I understand that there are no commercial hybrids of common beans, so if you like how your variety does for you, you can let some beans fully ripen toward the end of the season and be able to get your own seed to grow next year (see also the Seed Saving forum). Common beans tend to self-pollinate, but if they are growing near another variety of bean, you might get some cross-pollination, which can give you something different (an accidental hybrid) than what you started with. If you plan to trade your spare seeds, I'd recommend you take steps to prevent them from cross-pollinating, or at least let traders know ahead of time.
