It may not be the mold itself that is the problem... but mold is a symptom of excess moisture. The beans were either not fully dried, or if they were brought in from the cold & opened immediately, moisture could have condensed on them. In either case, the desiccant did not do its job, so it must have already been saturated. I recommend the color-changing gel for seed drying, since you always have a visual indication of its potency.

Beans stored under moist conditions deteriorate very quickly. Most likely, they are all dead... but there is no harm in trying to grow them, provided that you have a back-up plan in case they fail.

I am an organic gardener, so I seldom recommend the use of chemicals; but there is a proper time & place for everything. If the seed is irreplaceable, you might want to treat it with a fungicide prior to planting. Be sure to read the label, and use one that is approved for use on vegetables.

Yes, I believe they are irreplaceable. I'm not sure who Jim got them from. He just received them in a trade last year. I have approx 30 beans. They appear to be a cutshort and are fat brown beans. All I know is that he told me that they were an unknown bean from sicily. I will do my best to grow them out. I sure hope they will germinate. Maybe Jim will come along and tell us what he knows about them. Speaking of Jim, I need to email him. I haven't talked with him since Feb if I am not mistaken. I hope he is doing well.
