Has anyone grown this African bean? I'm growing it and besides field peas and Asian long beans, it's the only bean doing well in my garden. Just wondering what it's going to taste like? Should we eat it as a green bean or shelly?
It's a bush, African bean. Gets stringy when eaten as a green bean. I purchased it from Southern Seed Exchange. It's the only green bean except some sort of burgundy that even attempted to come up and it's doing as well as the cowpeas and long beans. It hasn't set any beans yet but looks like it's getting close. I have about twenty feet planted and they are about a foot tall, starting to make blossoms. I'm sort of excited that I've found a bean that seems to like my alkaline soil and hot weather, so far, anyway!
Actually, the bean is called Kebarika. We were passed it by one of our seed growers out in Oregon. What he told us is that the window of opportunity for picking and eating this bean as a snap bean is pretty small and generally it's let mature into a shelling bean. Hope that helps you out. Glad to hear it's doing well for you.
Sorry about the misspelling. The name on the package was smeared so that I couldn't read it. I should have gone back to SSE to get the spelling. I just planted another 8 foot row so hopefully we like them, at least we'll get two batches at different times.
