Help With Iris ID Please

I have these two Iris varieties in my garden that have been there forever. Does anyone know the names or varieties of these two. These fans are topping out at about 24 inches and the flower stalks are about 36 inches tall with 3 or 4 blooms. I have found a lot of similar ones but no exact matches on the internet.

The one with the purple falls looks like Shah Jehan. I have no idea of the other.

The one with the purple falls looks to me like HELEN COLLINGSWOOD.
The second one, I don't know; is that its 'true' color? Could it be MELANIE (which is a bit more lavender?)

Maybe the falls on yours are taller when I see them closer. Sorry

Thanks everybody. I appreciate the input. I am new to this and I don't think I had my email "turned on" to receive your replies. I'm hoping I do now.

I also think your first one looks alot like Helen Collingwood. No idea what the second one might be, but it isn't Dauntless, which is much more red-violet.

Ngraham, I don't think your Dauntless is correct - way too much buff-gold going on there and not nearly enough red. Here's my Dauntless from Superstition:

The first one is not Shah Jehan. I finally found the photo I made this spring and Shah Jehan has a white rim around the falls and the standards are totally different. Really the only thing they have in common is the purple on the falls. This old man's memory is really slipping. Lee Mincy

I find that the most characteristic feature of Helen Collingwood is the colour of the style arms, as shown in the link below. This is not visible in the photo above, because of the angle of the shot.

Here is a link that might be useful: Helen Collingwood

Being a new poster here I am curious if I should have added to this post or just started a new post. Let me know which way I should have gone, for future reference.

First of all lets start with the purple/white iris. Member "sparaxis" said the most characteristic feature of a "Helen Collingwood" is the color of the style arms. God bless Paint Shop Pro. I zoomed in on the iris behind the one up front, in my original picture, and got this.

If what I'm seeing is the styles in this enlargement, than we have a positive ID on this one as a "Helen Collingwood". Are those the styles? Can I get a witness?

Next is the lavender iris. I can't find a picture on the net of a "Dauntless". Can somebody hook me up? If member "garden of mu" is correct with the "Dauntless" than the picture posted by member "ngraham" may well be the same iris I have, although the falls are not the same shape. Does that make a difference? I found this one on eBay, item number 7771225797, if you want to see the listing.

She doesn't know the name of hers either, but it seems to be a match to mine. She graciouly let me "borrow" her picture. If the falls on mine were a tad bit wilted, which I don't think they were, is it possible that all three of these are the same variety? Is there that subtle and small of a difference in varieties, say in the falls, even though the colors look to be the same. Or is this just the same variety and nature has put some variety in the shape of the falls? Just some points I am pondering as I learn the iris trade. Thanks everybody.

Mikes picture of Dauntless is from the Hips web site, so is very likely authentic.

It does look like my Dauntless is wrong, received it in trade a couple of years ago, those things happen. I still like the veining on it, although it is rather a washed out color.

    dendenq:
I don't think your pinkish iris (which might or might not be the ebay iris) and ngraham's iris are the same. The veining is wrong, the shape is wrong and the color (if accurate) is definitely wrong.
As for the bitone it looks like HELEN C, but I would not give it a positive ID based on your single picture. Those 'characteristic' stylearms of HELEN C are commonly found on other historic bitones of this color pattern. You could say it is a possible match, pending further investigation, such as growing a real HELEN alongside, or at the very least, take additional photographs and observations to compare with others.

Could it be Rosy Wings? I know it's more pale than the photo on historic iris soc. site, but it's very similar.

(couldn't figure out how to upload pic. newbie here. so here's the link to the photo)
