Stargazer lily in Louisiana

I sent a friend in Baton Rouge, LA some stargazer lily bulbs. Will they be perennials in LA? Is it best to plant them (6-8 inches deep?) in the ground or in pots? Will squirrels eat the bulbs, and if so, how do you stop them from getting them. Any other suggestions on how to care for the bulbs in LA.

I live in Albany, NY and my Stargazer bulbs do well. Thank you for your thoughts.

They will be perrenial bulbs in LA as long as it has a cold period for atleast 8 weeks. If not then your friend can simply dig up the bulbs and place in some wood shavings and store in the refrigirator for 8 weeks and then plant them out in the garden again. If you use pots make sure it is a deep pot and plant the bulbs atleast 6-8 in deep. Squirrels shouldnt bother the bulbs.
