Ken, thanks also for the masking tape idea which I used when removing possible HVX infected plants. Tightly bundled-up leaves make a hosta so much better to handle because
- during digging out the plant the area around the plant is better viewable,
- the proper distance to the crown and roots will be easier determined permitting less damage to infected roots,
- no leaves will be nicked which would disperse HVX, (I did not nick any)
- the dug out hosta is easier to handle on its way into the garbage bag.

Here is a link that might be useful: Moving the Big Boys

Thaks Ken from me too! My hostas never get that big because my maximum spot size is 3 gal, BUT I remembered your masking tape trick when we had to divide a lirope gigantea that was about 3' wide. The 1/8 division I replanted had a very little root ball. So I taped him up and staked him. Cute don't you think?

I think I'll do that next spring when I'm going to cut back my ornamental grass...cool idea!! It will also help with gathering up the dead grass.
