Dennis, do you have the DTM for the burgundy favas? I am looking for one with shorter DTM than Windsor. I planted in mid October and have been successful fighting the aphids (enough lady bugs so they take care of themselves), however, the favas do now quite mature before the stink bugs, and now I have another pest/disease I cannot recognize, but it looks like rust that roses get? If my favas were done two weeks ago all this would have been avoided.

I'll check the package for you tonight and see what it says.

Cabrita -- the package says 90 days to maturity.

I don't know how that compares with other favas, and I guess it would also depend on when you planted them -- it would be a lot longer, obviously, if you planted them in fall and overwintered them in a cool-climate region than for spring planting.

Thanks for looking! Well, it is the same as the Windsors. They claim DTM 85 days, no way! I planted a bed in mid October and just harvested that batch last weekend, isn't that more like 200 days? My DTM is always much longer than the seed packets say for some reason.

I cannot plant them in the spring! they would not mature before the hoards of plant eating insects invade. They are much happier in cooler weather, for us it is perfect to plant them as the weather cools down and as you say "over winter them". Not completely accurate since we don't really have a winter. Fall transitions directly into spring here. The deciduous trees have new buds on the branches before all the old brown leaves are done falling.

I think I can plant about two weeks earlier (early October) and mature them in time. I still want to try different varieties anyway, more colors and flavors in the garden is always a good thing.
