Sugar snaps need a trellis. They climb 4-6 feet. 2 to 3 inches apart is best. I prefer 3.

I set out my Sugar Snaps around the end of March and they climb nearly to the top of my 8' chain link fence (I hit them with MG every other week). I space them every 2".

I have now thinned my peas to one every approx. 3 inches. Plan to provide the trellis soon! Sorry for my ignorance (again) but what is MG? I am all organic. Will compost or seaweed suffice? Thanks!

I expect it's a bit late to mention that you can eat the thinnings. Pea shoots taste like peas and are good in salads and stir fries.

I thought about that afterward. When I clipped them they smelled just like peas! Imagine! (hey, I'm new at this...:)). But I added them to my composter instead.

Does anybody have pictures with thw sugar snap peas true leaves? I'm a brand new gardener and started seeds indoors. I'm wondering if it's time to move them to a little bigger pot (pot on?) but don't know how to tell if they have the true leaves.

I think typically peas are direct sewn as soon as the soil can be worked -pretty early. It's my understanding that many veggies that vine do not like to have their roots disturbed, so planting directly is best, as opposed to starting from seed indoors. Although I have had some good luck at starting bean seeds in used paper coffee cups. When the plants are big enough you can just rip the cup and plant the seedling dirt and all, without any disturbance of the roots.

Carol5, peas don't get seedling leaves like tomatoes - they grow their true leaves straight off. You can transplant peas but I wouldn't bother to do it more than once from indoors to out - no point in potting them on. It's just extra work. You need an awful lot of pea plants to get a reasonable crop and transplanting them all individually is a big job. Make sure they are hardened off before you plant the outside.
