State half runner is a very good bean for tradional style southern cooking. They freeze ok, better when quite young before they get beanny. Basicly a bush bean with multiple short runners,. Short pods, which makes more difficult to pick. Closer to pole bean flavor than standard bush beans.

If I were to plant them in rows would they need a little extra elbowroom over the normal 4" spacing?

I treat just like regular bush beans, same plates in the planter. They do make a tangle mass of vines, more difficult to pick than regular bush beans.

I planted them in a tomato cage and they loved it. Just about the right height. The cage was the kind made from 1/4 of a 25 foot roll of tomato cage wire "fence", about 3 foot width. Wove a 5-6 foot stake (or 2) through the wire to support it.
