iris and peonies

I have a garden bed that I'd like to add some iris to. I thought about putting some iris in front of the peonies, so that as the peonies finish blooming, the iris could take over. But, I'm not sure if that would work, I realize that peony and iris bloom times vary according to the variety, but in general, do peonies bloom first? Should I look for mainly late blooming irises? Or would they bloom around the same time? If they do, I guess I could put intermediate bearded iris in front of the peonies in coordinating colors, the purples agains the pink of the peonies might be nice too. Any suggestions?
