Well, honestly, one doesn't need to know much about them to grow lilies well in our climate, but if you are looking for more than just a picture book, for me, the ne plus ultra is Lilies: A Guide for Growers and Collectors by Edward Austin McRae. It has enough scientific input to satisfy the interested amateur, without overwhelming, thus making it a very interesting read.
