Snow peas are a cool weather crop. They would probly be at least harvest stage before planting acorn squash. They cannot take heat at all. There are many varaieties ranging from dwarfs that don't need trellising to tall ( 4 ft +). They do not like acid soils( lower tha pH 6) but other than that are not very demanding. too much nitrogen and you get over abundant vines. Unless you are in an area with cool summers, you may be too late in planting them.

i live in upstate ny...we have cool summers..especially nighs that can get into 50-60's. Is it realy to late for zone 5?? I have one inch sprouts and I intend to transplant them this weekend. of well....

Go ahead and plant your snow peas. You will have time to get plenty of pods before it gets too hot. Vines may grow to 4-5 feet.

Don't worry too much about companion planting. As long as you are not planting right under a walnut tree, you should get some fruit from all your plants. Overcrowding or overshadowing might be more of a problem than companion planting.

If you have too much N, plant determinate tomatoes, or you will get alot of vine before you get fruit. You can buy a 10-10-10 fertilizer, or super phosphate. You do need phosphorus for good roots and blooming.

But even if you don't use chemical fertilizers, just put your plants in, have the soil loosened up first, and keep them watered and mulched, and even if you don't get alot, you will get something.
