    Have you had seedlings before?

If the Wintry Sky x Willam Mohr seeds sprout, you will have plants that are 1/8th arilbred, which means they will not look like arilbreds at all. These are not recognized as arilbreds by the Society for Arilbred iries. Maybe, it was just a fun thing to see what might happen.

I love to plant seeds. I even had some (well, actually lots of) rugosa rose seeds come up. I was all ready to make my 5G selling the next wonder rose to Jackson and Perkins. They just looked like the parent plants. Oh well.

    Keep us posted!

You lost me Walter I do no understand . Milliam Mohr is a 1/2 bred onco bred which should give me 1/4 breds wouldn't it.

There has been discussions in the SLI Bulletin over the years about the amount of aril blood in William Mohr.

Further, the World of Irises says that it sets very few seeds and these are from 'unreduced gametes.' So that may be the reason for 22 chr. count and not 24. It has produced tets, and I believe all in the Mohr series are quarterbred, but many show no aril characteristics.

Back in the eighties, when the quantum system was established, a lot of 'arilbreds' were 'disenrolled' because they were lacking at least a quarter arilbred. MARY MCCLELLEN was a William Mohr Award Winner (for quarterbreds) had the award taken away because of lack of aril blood. The winners of this award must have 1/4 aril blood.

I did not know this information had been changed on the online database. What is in the R & Is in many cases is wrong about the amount of aril blood.

    Confusing!

You were lucky to get the seeds you got. Let's hope they sprout.

interesting Walter I missed that. You are right about lucky for the seed. I got 8 but I did not say they were across 9 attempts and 5 seed pods.
    I have my fingers crossed.

My gosh! I doubt that I would have tried that many times. You are determined to get something, and I wonder what it is.

My fingers got ahead of my brain or vice versa when I typed SLI, which is Society for Louisiana Irises. I should have typed ASI, which is Aril Society International.

Since a late feb freeze damaged blossoms here in the inland pacific northwest, bloom was only as twenty percent, but here are a few of my successfull crosses.

    Prowess X Starring
    Sharlee X Natural Grace
    Dude Ranch X Good Thing
Coming up Roses X Pink Pincurls

The Sharlee X Natural Grace cross yielded about 50 seeds, the others were 20 or less.

Really enjoyed this post. I had no idea that Louisa's Song (my favorite Iris) is 1/4 arilbred. I tried desperatly to cross Louisa with Tintinnabulation and the other way, but no go. My easiest cross was Ruffles & Lace x Canaries and Cream. Ruffles set a pod w/seeds on every cross. I didn't count the seeds. Scarlet Embers is also an Iris I really like. Since you had success with Fiery Temper I think I'll put that on my cross list for next year. I got Ring Around Rosie last year but she didn't bloom. Hoping for blooms in 2007 and will try that cross also with Whispering Spirits. I also got seeds from:
Kiss of Kisses x Country Diary
    Kevin's Theme x Chasing Rainbows
    Liason x Estatic Echo
Sudden Impact x Honky Tonk Blues
    Trillion x Chasing Rainbows
    Twilight Blaze x Fiery Temper,
and seeds from my Iris ensata Ruby Star.

Slate crossed Louisa's Song with Energizer (1/2 arilbred) and the sprouts from that cross will be quarterbreds. LS actually cuts down the aril characteristics in this cross as she carries no aril genes. LS's parents are Cloud Berry x About Town and are registered as Tall Bearded.

To get good arilbred features, you need to cross 1/2 by 1/2. Most quarterbreds are sterile. Of the arilmeds I have grown, 100% have been sterile. This is a cross of a half arilbred with a median bearded iris.

I'm not at all familiar with arilbreds. Do I understand correctly that I wouldn't be able to cross LS with anything but a 1/2 arilbred?

What about crosses of Iris ensata x Iris germanica, or Siberian Iris x Iris germanica?

You could probably cross LS to any other bearded iris.

I don't know of any successful crosses of bearded x beardless.

If you have an AIS Bulletin, go to the Storefront in the back of the bulletin and order THE WORLD OF IRISES. It is the best source on iris information. Maybe, you could drop a hint and get it as a Christmas present.

Thanks Walter! That sounds like an idea. I guess I'll keep trying to get some seeds with LS.
