Transplanting potted Asiatic lilies

I have an Asiatic lily that belonged to my mother. She passed away 3 years ago. I dug up the bulb and transplanted it into a very large pot. It has grown and bloomed each year. It has many buds and is ready to bloom again. It really has outgrown the pot and needs to be put into the ground. When should I transplant it for best results? This is the only one I have of my mother's and I don't want to lose it. It is huge! Any suggestions on how to divide and remove smaller bulbs properly also? I would appreciate any help. Thanks so much. I am on the border of zones 5/6.
