Pacific Coast Iris query

I first posted this on the NW Coast forum and was directed here:

About four years ago I bought a nicely coloured PC Iris (bronze-y brown and blue-green) which flowered - then went to compost, leaving a solitary pod. I planted up the seeds and got a surviving strike of six. Some flowered last year and a few more this year. All have been either a soft yellow, or yellow and cream. No gorgeous colours at all. All are shorter than the original.

If I crossed them, one to t'other? If I went out to Iris innominata (currently in full flower) would I 'get the colours back'? Or should I just buy a packet of seed?
