Growing under Lights

Flourescent light question

I need some lights to finish up some seedlings (tomato) but I was thinking if I get some decent lights I might be able to also grow some spinach after the tomatos are done.

I would like to stick with 24" flourescent tubes for space savings. Would 4 of these give decent results on spinach? How much area of usable light would it provide?

What are keywords when buying bulbs? The tube type is better than the CFL right? I think I would rather not have to buy a new balast every new bulb but it seems the CFL are much more popular.

Would it be twice as good to buy a 250 HPS or MH light?

keyword 1: we all use 48" tubes because everything else is way more expensive, for instance wally world shoplights. it is hard to find "decent" lights, so you might as well just get "cheap" ones that work fairly well.
with HID, now you are talking expense, so it depends how prosperous you are. We recommend you buy the 400w conventional HPS ballast, and a LumenMax reflector, and a Ceramic Metal Halide lamp. that would be twice as good, but many many times more expensive, and many many times more versatile. Both CMH lamps and HPS lamps run on HPS conventional ballast.
