question from iris rookie

Hello, I have not planted irises before and am a little confused over the mixed messages I have seen.

I have ordered a bunch of bearded irises to plant this fall. I was planning to plant them in a bed with has some hydrangeas currently. Yet, I read that irises do not like a lot of water, which would be a problem because my hydrangeas are certainly thirsty plants. However, I thought irises were great plants for wet areas? Or that really, they grow almost anywhere?

Do I need to create a separate bed? or can I add these to the areas with the hydrangeas? Any advice you can give would be appreciated.

My mother and grandmother have many many irises but I have not yet planted them for myself!

I am in zone 5a/6b in upstate NY.

Thanks!
