Beans turning yellow/brown (pic)

Hey,

Just bought my first house in February. Came with a 16x20 foot garden, 30x3 raised (paver stones) bed along the back of the house. This is my first attempt at gardening, ever..

So this spring, a bunch of left overs from the previous owners started popping up. Two of the plants in the raised bed everyone thought were brussel sprouts because the bottom of the stalk had small bundles that looked like brussel sprouts. Well, now those are dead and the plant is looking like some sort of bean (not sure which).

The 2 plants were getting rather large and wide and drooping so I put them in tomato cages. The past week, they have turned yellow and brown as if dying. There is a possibility that I am watering too much. I have a soaker hose that I turn on 2-3 times a week for like 20 minutes.

Any thoughts on what could be wrong and what the exact kind of beans these are?

I'm pretty sure that's still a brassica, and those are (enormous) seed pods...

Yes, they are seed pods of a Brassica (cabbage family plants, so Brussels sprouts are a distinct possibility) - and in the background you have what looks like a nice crop of parsley going to seed too.

I agree.
My collards live for 3-4 years, if watered in the 100F heat.
They bloom a yellow flower then have seed pods, which dry & shed millions of seeds. Some come up & grow, some fade away.
You can eat the "rattail" radish seed pods, which look like your pic.

My bok choy never set seed pods that huge, but there are lots of varieties out there. Brassicas are a crazy family with lots of variety, but I'll second (third?) the notion that it is a brassica. The flowers and podding system look exactly like my kale when it goes to seed, but my kale pods are slim, like the size of a spaghetti noodle, and those look the size of pinkie fingers! Maybe you've got some great new variety of brassica that people will grow for the pod :)

The dried pods are perfect for seed saving.
