don't give up on those old seeds

i have some romano bush beans i had saved 10 or 12 years ago from seeds i got in a trade. they sat on the front porch most of that time in all manner of heat and cold. each year i would think i should plant them again, but never did. this year i decided to give them a try once again. i planted 20 seeds in a cell pack 2 seeds per cell. 16 of the 20 sprouted. no soaking, or special treatment given.

not bad, eh.

10-12 years... that's pretty remarkable for storage under those conditions.

You beat me to this topic. ;-) I've been planting much of my older seed for renewal this year, and making detailed observations about their shelf-life under my storage conditions. Most of the 65 legumes I am growing this year are from seed that is 6-7 years old, and the results thus far have been encouraging. I'll report at length when everything has germinated (or not).
