Baby Blessed

With the heat and drought we have had this year in NE Mississippi I had given up on rebloom. I had two bloom in late June and one bloom stalk whithered in July. We have had some rain(need much more) and the weather is much cooler. Dr. Zurbrigg was smiling down on me this morning as I found one bloom open on Baby Blessed and another bud about to open. I'm just glad you got enough rain to encourage it to bloom Lee. I can't wait for some of the rebloomers I got to do their thing.

What a treat it must have been. Isn't it a real pick me up going out and finding something smiling up at you?

Maryanne I know you are reminded of your grand baby each time anything in that bed blooms. What a sweet thought.

    Happy Gardening Ya'll,
    Marian

I don't have any irises blooming (frown)

Congratulations! I haven't seen anything remotely like a bloom. If Earl of Essex is normal this year, it won't start for a couple of weeks. I've watered & fertilized Immortality. I have to say, if it doesn't bloom it must be sterile or something. Right now it has the healthiest foliage of any iris I have

Anxious, Immortality and Brother Carl bloomed all of last year. Anxious bloomed this spring but a late freeze got it. I have Anxious in 3 places(different micro climates) and Immortality in three and Brother Carl in two. We have plenty of moisture right now but I think the late freeze confused everything. Baby blessed is all I have in bloom and no other buds right now. There is still a while to go before we normally have a hard freeze so I am still hopefull. I am 63 years old and have never seen my lawn killed by frost after I had mowed it one time. I had mowed it two times this year and the whole yard was killed by frost. I had never seen pecan trees killed it the spring once they had leafed out. All the leaves were frozen and it was mid June before they put out again. This has been a very strange year. Lee Mincy

My Corn Harvest is pregnant with twins. This is its first time to bloom; has been in the ground since 8-06. I'm hoping for Brother Carl, Anxious and Immortality to shoot up a rogue stalk; sometimes rebloomers will do this right after they've been planted. Irisval PS: West Texas has had the wettest spring and coolest summer ever. I've lived here 29 years.

Irisval, everyone on all the forums has probably heard me complain :) but this year has made records with heat & drought. We are more than 15" below normal rainfall this year, & right now still no rain in sight. We did get a couple of inches about a week ago which really helped. We got that late freeze like Lee, I lost a couple of young trees to that, & a few plants. Seems like everyone has had odd weather, I really hope next year is better! I really missed my iris blooms

I found Comstant Companion in bloom this morning. It had rebloomed in July just before the extreme heat started. It also bloomed in the spring. This has been reported by some as a continious bloomer and I believe it may be. I just planted it last year. Lee Mincy

Yesterday afternoon, I found bloom stalks on Daughter of Stars, Bountiful Harvest and Second Time Around. I wasn't expecting anything here either because of the drought and the heat.
Haven't checked in on Baby Blessed yet, honestly the weeds have that bed so covered that it could have been blooming for weeks now and I wouldn't be able to see it.

I have 10 plants of Baby Blessed that I divided early summer before the drought and heat got bad so they all made it. They are in a location that only gets rainfall. It is too far from the house to water unless I haul it which I seldom do and only do when I first set an iris out. Those 10 plants have given me at least 12 blooms but some of them may have been on the same bloom stalk. It is not finished because I found two more buds this morning. The bed that has most of my rebloomers and does get extra water finally has a bloomstalk on both Immortality and Brother Carl. I may end up with as much rebloom as I had last year. It is still at least 6 weeks to normal hard freeze. It is just later and over not as long of a time as last year. I had 26 Iris to rebloom last year and some bloomed all summer and fall. Lee Mincy
