hi, i need your help in getting rid of these nasties. i have these beetles on my asiatic lilies. i did a search on the web and found out how destructive they are. the net also says to spray neem oil to get rid of the eggs and to pick off the adults. i have been doing that and even taking off and throwing out the leaves with the eggs on them. i am fighting a loosing battle. what else can i use? thanks for your help.

    Hi M

I can't believe there were not more responses to your posting!

I have had georgeous oriental lilies for years and only this year have discovered the heinous red beetle.

Hand picking, if you live there full time, twice a day is your best bet and/or especially wiping clean the eggs/larva each day before they even get to the adult stage.

This really sucks eggs, if not literally, and I fear I may have to dump my beautiful, what tubers/bulbs?

    G'luck,

I've got them too but the thing is they are not on my lilies. They are on crepe myrtles and rose of sharon plants. I hate them with a lot of expletives thrown in! My DH and I have tried hand picking them and they do seem to be getting less. Last year and this year they were all over my red stripe cannas. I dug some rhizomes for a trade and they had been chewed up by the grubs of the lily beetles. I've heard they don't come back every year. I wouldn't pull my lilies up but I don't know the recourse to take to get rid of them entirely.
    Good luck!

Don't get rid of your lillies. I have come up with a good solution to get rid of the beetles, that won't cost the earth.
I went out last Sat. to buy the spray. I noticed on the 1 that 1 ingredient was cooking oil, on the other was soap.
I went to the grocery store and bought veg. cooking oil and
I use Sunlight dish soap. Erwigs do not like Sunlight soap, so I thought why not mix up some cooking oil with my sunlight and spray my plants. It works. I use.
1 cup cooking oil, 1/2 cup sunlight dish soap put in 1 liter
spray bottle fill with water. Shake well and spray all those bugs on your lillies. Within 2 sec. the big beetles were dead. it will also kill the lauva I'm keeping an eye on the eggs to see if it kills them 2. Also I have been spraying the ground around all my lily plants.
Try this and see what you think? It works for me.
Good luck with your lillies. I just love mine and refuse to get rid of them.

belated thanks to all your responses. i had checked for responses several times last year and when i did not see any i gave up. now spring is here and when i was clearing up the yard i found more dreaded red beetles in the ground and not where i have lilies!! I hope that they have not developed a taste for other plants!! I am going to try everything that has been suggested.
